AI for OSINT — Method First, Model Second
A model does not collect anything: it structures the pivot and summarises what you paste back. Used that way it speeds an investigation up. Used the other way it produces confident references that do not exist. Method first.
| The model does | You do |
|---|---|
| Turn a username, phone or domain into a pivot list | Open every source it proposes |
| Explain what a registry or archive field means | Query the registry or archive yourself |
| Summarise a page you paste, in neutral language | Check the summary against the page |
| Flag inconsistencies between two sources | Decide which source is authoritative |
| Draft the timeline and the write-up | Date and source every line you keep |

Step 1 — scope before you collect
Write the question and the stopping rule first: which identifier, which jurisdiction, which date range, and what would count as an answer. A model helps here because it will list the pivot classes you forgot; without the stopping rule the investigation grows until it stalls.

Steps 2 and 3 — collect, then pivot one hop at a time
Give it one identifier and ask only for the next hop, not the whole tree. One hop keeps every claim checkable. When it returns five candidate sources, open them in order and drop the dead ones before asking for the next hop, so the chain never rests on an unopened link.

Step 4 — corroborate, because it will invent
Ask for two independent sources per claim and treat a single source as a lead. Models produce plausible archive URLs and plausible dates; the failure mode is not obvious because the format is right. A claim you cannot open is a hypothesis, not a finding.

Step 5 — write it up with the uncertainty intact
Ask for a timeline with a confidence marker per line, then keep the markers. The value of an OSINT report is the difference between confirmed and probable, and a model will happily flatten both into declarative prose unless told not to.

━━━━ 💬 EXAMPLES ━━━━
Example prompts for AI for OSINT
>Identifier: a GitHub username. Give me the next single hop only — pivot classes, not a full tree — and say which ones are worth opening first.
One hop keeps the chain auditable; the ranking saves the obvious dead ends.
>Here are two pages I pasted. List the factual contradictions between them, without deciding which is right.
Contradiction-finding is reliable; adjudication is where the model starts guessing.
>Build the timeline from these confirmed items only, with a confidence marker on each line and no prose.
Keeps uncertainty in the deliverable instead of smoothing it away.

━━━━ ❓ FAQ ━━━━
Can a model do OSINT on its own?
Not live. It structures and summarises; collection still needs you to open the source. Its web snippets help but arrive without the page context you need to cite.
Will it invent sources?
Yes, occasionally, with a correct-looking URL. Ask for two sources per claim and open both; a single unopened source stays a lead.
What identifier should I start from?
The most stable one you have — a domain or a username before a phone number. Stable identifiers survive a pivot; a display name does not.
Is pasting a target's data safe?
There is no account and no identity attached, so nothing ties the paste to you. For regulated data, check /privacy first.
